Requesting Class Permits

What Is a Permit?

A permit is an electronic "permission slip" that allows you to either (1) register for a course section that is closed to you because it has been labeled "restricted" or "permit required" by the academic department, or (2) take a class on an audit basis rather than for a normal letter grade.

"Permit Required" or "Restricted"

If a section you want to register for carries the note "Restricted" or "Permit Required," you must receive an electronic permit before you can register for the course.

  • For almost all subjects, this means you must request a permit from the academic department offering the subject.

  • However, for any subject offered by the Fogelman College of Business and Economics (FCBE), you must contact either FCBE's Undergraduate Advising Office or its Graduate Programs Office.

If the department/unit agrees to allow you to register for the course, it will issue an electronic "permit" in the University's registration system. Until it issues this permit, the system will not allow you to register for the class.

To see if a department has issued you a permit:

  • In Spectrum Self Service - Check the "Registration Status" screen.

Audits

If you wish to audit a class that has a Normal grading type (A+, A, A-, B+...F), you also must request a permit to do so. Be sure you are familiar with the Undergraduate or Graduate audit policy.

Again, you must obtain the permit from the department offering the subject, or from the FCBE's Undergraduate Advising Office or Graduate Programs Office if the course is offered by FCBE.

If you register for the course without this permit, you will be graded according to Normal grading rules and not Audit grading rules.

Some Important Points to Remember About Permits

  1. The Registrar's Office CANNOT issue permits. Only the academic departments or, in FCBE, the advising units can issue permits.

  2. You must actually register for the class after the the permit is issued if you want it to be part of your Schedule. The permit is merely permission for you to take the class: the department or unit is not registering you in the class. Only you can register yourself in the class, and you must do this through the online registration system.

  3. If the online registration system will not allow you to register for the class, even though the department/unit agreed to issue a permit, contact the office again and explain the problem. The office will need to check to see if it issued the permit correctly.

  4. If you decide you do not want to take the class after all and drop the permit, you will no longer be able to register for the class. So be sure you really do not want the class before dropping the permit. Otherwise, you will have to request the permit again.
